World wonders and famous Korean tourist sites and scenery made of ice and snow will be the gifts of Harbin ice sculptors to South Korea's largest winter carnival - Gnagwon-do Hwacheon Mountain Trout Festival. On December 5th, 17,000 paper trout shape lamp were lit up, which opened the annual Hwacheon Mountain Trout Festival. Asia Ice Lantern Square, one of the biggest highlight programs of this years event, was officially opened to the public as well. As the coldest period has not arrived yet in this South Korean city, the ice lantern square that occupies 1000 square meters was an indoor creation. To finish construction of this huge project it cost a total ice consumption volume of 600 tons. And the varieties of ice lanterns feature themes of famous sites and scenery of both China and South Korea. Among the ice sculpture makers are Harbin artists Xu Degui and his son Xu Zhiqin. For the Chinese father and son and their fellow artists it is not the first time that they has brought China's ice art abroad. They feel proud of showing their talents and creations to foreign people. In winter, there is a festival being held to showcase the sympathy of the local people. It is called the Hwacheon Mountail Trout Festival in Gangwon-do. This is a unique winter festival that presents Gangwon-do's unspoiled natural environment and the warm hearts of the people of Hwacheon. Hwacheon Mountain Trout Festival is the biggest celebration each year for local people. Since Hwacheon and Harbin are sister cities and both of the two are known for their winter festivals, this year organizers especially invited ice artists from Harbin to contribute their crafts to Hwacheon festival. |
