Report from Xinhua on August 10th. China will carry out the fundamental study on cold tolerance germplasm resources of rice genes and make efforts to cultivate 鈥済reen super rice鈥?adapting to cold climate.
On August 10th, the national key lab of crop genetic improvement northeast co-operation base was founded in Heilongjiang. This is an important commodity grain base in China and the most northern rice cultivation in the world. The base is built by the national key lab of crop genetic improvement affiliated to Huazhong Agricultural University and Heilongjiang University.
According to the agreement of co-operation, they will work together in terms of lab, exchange of information and techniques as well as personnel training; promote scientific research on crops genetic improvement including cultivation of 鈥済reen super rice in cold area鈥? According to the experts, different from 鈥済reen super rice鈥?in the south China, 鈥済reen super rice in cold area鈥?is not a hybrid rice but pure rice. It is the green super rice that adapts to the biological conditions in Heilongjiang, without pesticide, less fertilizer and is water saving and drought resistance.
In 2008, rice cultivation area has reached about 37 million mus in Heilongjiang but there still exist many local problems. After the foundation of the national key lab of crop genetic improvement, it will cultivate new breeds to meet the needs of farming in cold areas by using modern science and technology, according to the ecological features of Heilongjiang province.
