[Lead-in]: China's independently designed optical telescope, most powerful of its kind in the world, passed national appraisal on Thursday.
[Voice over]: Located in a research base of the National Astronomical Observatories, the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectro-scopic Telescope, or the LAMOST, was completed in October 2008.
With an investment of 235 million Yuan RMB, the mammoth device can see at least twice as far into space and measure more spectral emissions than its previous model.
Chinese scientists say LAMOST will bring the country's astronomy studies into the 21century with a leading role in wide field spec-troscopy as well as large scale and sample astronomy and astrophysics.
