Engr. Lin Shangyang was born in 1932 in Xiamen, Fujian Province. He graduated in 1961 from Mechanical Engineering Department, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), majoring in welding technology and equipment profession. Currently he is the incumbent director of Technical Committee of Harbin Welding Institute, Machinery Science Academe, and is a professor-level senior engineer. In 1995 he was selected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.In 1970s, he has completed the research on some jointing materials, such as low alloy steel electroslag welding and submerged arc welding wire (with the yielding strength of 400-600Mpa), FE-AL-MN austenitic low-temperature steel welding rod, seawater corrosion resistant steel welding rod and so on. He invented a unique underwater semiautomatic welding torch, together with some corresponding equipments, with local drainage and CO2 protection, with the help of which he completed the projects of underwater welding technology. In 1980s he completed study of double wire narrow-gap submerged arc welding technology and equipment. For the moment 26 sets of equipment have been put in use in boiler, chemical, heavy and other large enterprises, welded products like the 30-60 MW power station boiler drum, large scale hydraulic cylinders and so on, and the maximum thickness of welding goes up to 40 MM. Since 1987, he has been engaged in automation equipment of welding, and has achieved some developments such as the Gantry headed automatic welding equipment, the workstation of Frame Welding Robot, and motorcycle welding cluster system.
