Aged people chat with each other at the Fengyuanlinshe Day Care Center for Aged People in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, July 21, 2010. The day care center was put into operation for trial on July 16. Aged people read newspaper, play games, take physical exercises, watch opera performance and chat with each other at the center in daytime and go home to enjoy the happiness of family life in the evening every day. China has become an aging society since 1999. The aged population, referring to people age 60 years and above, increased by 7.25 million to 167.14 million last year, or 12.5 percent of the total population of China. The support of the aged which mainly depends on family in tradition, faces increasingly more dificulties in China. The young gerneration born under the birth control policy, especially the "only child", will be under great pressure of support and care of their parents when they get married. That is, one couple may have the responsibility to nurse 4 elderly ones. The establishment of day-care center for aged people will release the pressure more or less on one hand, and relieve loneliness of the elderly on the other hand. (Xinhua/Liang Xu) |
