Yang Mingyi, a student of late traditional Chinese painting master Chang Dai-chien, opened his painting and calligraphy exhibition Wednesday in Harbin. More than 50 pieces of his original works are on display at the exhibition.
Yang Mingyi is regarded as one of the best-known Chinese artists of the twentieth century. Born in Sichuan province, he graduated from Whampoa Military Academy and acquired painting techniques from Chang Dai-chien. He moved to Singapore and then Japan before finally settling in Sichuan in 1975.
In the 1990s, Yang Mingyi established Whampoa Arts School in Shenzhen. Over the past years, he has been trying to establish contacts with Whampoa alumni in a bid to make efforts for the reunification of the country.
