Yagou Moya Stone Carving Statues of the Jin Dynasty

There are two stone statues carved on two neighboring pieces of granite, situated on the south halfway up Stone-man (Shiren) Mountain in Yagou. Of the two stone carving statues, one is male, the other female, and in terms of size, they are like real man. The two statues are sitting side by side and looking forward. The male one wears a headpiece, boots with tine head and a short stick in hand. It is 185cm in height, 105cm in width. The length of its head is 33cm and the width of its face is 22cm. It sits up crossing his left leg. The female is blurred, but from the rubbings, we can know it wears a hat, a straight collar, and the two hands joined under sleeves, the body leaned to the right with two legs crossed.According to the modern visual habits, the male one is at the left and the female one is at the right, the size of the male a little bigger. The two statues were both carved on the face of the granite with the natural radian. As for the carving technique, linear carving is the main method used. But the skills of using the knife in engraving are diversified, combining straight carving, side carving and circle carving when depicting various lines of the human body. With the distinctive main and minor parts, the whole carving shows the craftsmen鈥檚 superb skills.
