Chinese stocks closed lower Thursday, with financial shares leading the declines. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gave up early gains to close 1.32 percent lower at 2,567.44. The Shenzhen Component Index fell 2.06 percent to 7,597.01. Combined turnover on the two bourses expanded to 310.6 billion yuan (about 44.76 billion U.S. dollars) from 292.26 billion yuan the previous trading day. Losers outnumbered gainers by 1,277 to 132 at the Shanghai bourse, and by 1,882 to 190 in Shenzhen. Brokerage firms led the declines, with the sub-index down 4.29 percent. CITIC Securities, one of China's leading brokerage firms, fell 2.23 percent to 16.63 yuan. Sinolink Securities went down 4.36 percent to 7.67 yuan. Bucking the downward trend, shares of gold miners and smelteries gained on rising gold prices. Zhongjin Gold Corp. climbed 3.97 percent to 7.86 yuan. Gansu Ronghua Industry Group surged by the 10-percent daily limit to 3.75 yuan. Gold futures surged as the U.S. dollar fell after comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell appeared to imply fewer interest-rate increases ahead. |
