Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 5.22 percent, at 2,583.46 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 6.07 percent lower at 7,524.09 points. The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 6.30 percent to close at 1,261.88 points.
