Police in east China's Jiangsu Province have uncovered a huge fake diet pills case, arresting 15 suspects and seizing 150,000 pills containing a harmful chemical substance. The diet pills were sold online using claims that they were "candies that can break down fat." Police in Taizhou's Jiangyan District traced a customer complaint to the source and tracked down a counterfeiting workshop this month, they said Monday. A chemical substance called sibutramine was found to be one of the ingredients in the pills. The substance can increase the risk of heart attacks and is strictly prohibited in many countries, including China, said Jiang Yueping, a police officer. An illegal workshop in a shabby house near a public toilet in the city of Yangzhou was raided by police. The case involved over 10 million yuan (1.6 million U.S. dollars). |
