Chinese police have found nearly 3,000 missing children by collaborating with the tech sector to spread information on popular mobile applications, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

The ministry said police had logged 3,053 missing children on the "reunion" system over the past two years. A total of 2,980, or 97.6 percent of those reported missing, have been found.

The system, whose fourth upgrade was completed Thursday, was developed with tech giant Alibaba. It is linked to 25 mobile apps and new media platforms, the ministry said. After a missing child is logged, the information pops-up on apps opened by people living nearby, allowing them to report information to police quickly and easily.

A ministry official said Chinese authorities remained resolute in fighting child-trafficking and severely punishing every offender.
