[File photo: China News Service] Chinese Transport Minister Li Xiaopeng has suggested listing the operation of overloaded trucks as a crime of dangerous driving, China News Service reports. Li made the suggestion on Saturday while answering legislators' questions at a joint inquiry on work safety and road safety, which was part of the ongoing bimonthly session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee. He suggested criminal responsibility be investigated to deter violations and improve road safety. Chinese authorities have been dealing with overloading as an issue for the past 12 years and have made some achievements, said Li, but economic benefits, lack of effective regulations, and illegal modification of trucks have made it difficult to solve the overloading problem. Along with tougher punishments for violators, Li promised better channels for public reporting on illegally modified or overloaded trucks. Among major accidents caused by trucks in China from 2006 to 2015, around 60 percent were due to overloading. |
