The Chinese foreign ministry has issued a statement, praising the decision made by Sao Tome and Principe to sever so-called "diplomatic ties" with the local authorities of Taiwan.
It follows a statement to that effect from the western African country.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying says the Chinese government appreciated the decision, calling it a return to the right track of the one-China principle.
Hua Chunying said accepting the one-China principle is the precondition and political foundation for China to develop friendship and cooperative relations with other countries.
The spokesperson also described the adherence to the one-China principle as a "general trend" in the international community.
