Two Chinese fugitives have been repatriated under the 2016 "fox hunt" anti-corruption campaign, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

The campaign aims to capture corrupt officials who have fled abroad.

One of the recently returned fugitives, surnamed Du, embezzled 20 million yuan (2.88 million USD) while serving as the head of finance at a department store in Beijing from 2007 to 2012.

Du fled to Thailand in 2012. After squandering most of his savings, Du ran a small business at a market, living from hand to mouth, said the report.

He was caught by the Thai police in November and returned on December 2nd.

Another returned fugitive, surnamed Jin, had been at large for 18 years.

The 62-year-old embezzled from clients in June 1998, fleeing after he found that he couldn't repay the money he had taken. Jin caused losses of more than 20 million USD to his company.

He had passed through Canada, Malaysia and Philippines during his years on the run and changed his identity several times. Jin can't speak English well and avoided any connection with other people, earning money by working under-the-table.

The Beijing police managed to contact Jin in October and persuaded him to come back. Jin surrendered himself and was repatriated on December 7th.

Policeman Lv Zheng, member of the "fox hunt" campaign, said they first abolish the validity of a fugitives' passport and then ask the overseas immigration authorities to help return the suspect. Also, the police will contact fugitives' relatives to help persuade the suspects to return home and confess their crimes.

Since April 2015, when Interpol issued red notices for the capture of 100 corrupt officials from China, 36 have been returned from over 16 countries and regions to stand trial, according to the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
