That's according to the Wall Street Journal, who report that VW is co-operating with China Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co., and that the two firms expect to make a formal announcement soon. Over a third of VW's foreign sales come form China, and the move towards producing electric cars could be in anticipation of the tightening of Chinese emissions standards. In a separate announcement today, Reuters revealed that Mercedes-branded electric vehicles will be sold in China for the first time. Apparently, more of the so-called 'New Energy Vehicles' (NEVs) are sold in China than in any other market. Reuters argue that this is partly due to government efforts to curb oil dependence and restrict emissions. China continues to be a booming market for auto-manufacturers, with the latest figures showing that sales have increased at their fastest level for 3 and a half years. Overall, manufacturers are selling an astonishing 22 percent more vehicles this year than at the same point last year. |
