The Chinese government is voicing is official opposition after two members of Japan's cabinet paid personal visits to the Yasukuni Shrine. The two officials visited the shrine on Monday to mark the 71st anniversary of Japan's unconditional surrender in World War II. A Chinese Foreign Ministry statement says the move once again proves the "wrong attitude" to the history-related issues by Japanese officials. The Yasukuni Shrine is meant to honor the country's war-dead. However, it also honors 14 Class-A war criminals among them. As such, visits to the shrine by Japanese politicians is viewed as an insult to the countries Japan invaded before and during the war, including China, Korea and the Philippines. |
