Afghanistan has voiced understanding and support for China's position in the South China Sea dispute. This came as China and Afghanistan issued a joint statement reaffirming support to each other in areas of common interest. Chinese Foreign Ministry's Spokesperson Hong Lei gave further details. "The two sides called on the countries concerned to resolve territory and maritime disputes and differences through friendly consultations and negotiations in accordance with bilateral agreements and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). Both sides stressed that the right to settle disputes by means of their own choice by sovereign states and the State Parties of UNCLOS should be respected." The statement comes with the visit to China of the Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, which ended on Wednesday. Both sides undertook to firmly support each other on state sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, stressing mutual respect, understanding and cooperation. They have also agreed to expand and deepen bilateral commercial and investment cooperation, as well as strengthen exchanges in the fields of culture, education, security and anti-terrorism. Meantime, Hong Lei also said that China appreciated Togo's position on the South China Sea issue. Togo's government has recently issued a communique calling on direct dialogue to resolve the South China Sea issue and keep regional peace and security. Hong said Togo's position is in accordance with the basic facts of the South China Sea issue and the consensus, according to which disputes should be settled through negotiation and consultation. |
