An unnamed official with the Ministry of Commerce said on Monday that Australia should be prudent when using trade remedy measures as they were not the solution to global steel overcapacity.

The remark follows Australia's announcement on Saturday that it would levy anti-dumping taxes, of between 11.7 percent and 30 percent, on screw-thread steel exports from China.

The overcapacity across the world's steel industry is a result of anemic global economic recovery and tepid demand, said the official, adding that trade remedy measures will not work.

China is willing to work with other countries to address global steel overcapacity, and hopes that Australia will treat Chinese companies fairly and reasonably, the official said.
