Czech authorities are pointing to an existing train service running between their country and China as a key link in plans to try to turn the Czech Republic into a commercial hub for China in Eastern Europe. The service itself began in 2012. It's terminus in China is in Hubei's capital, Wuhan. Before arriving in the Czech Republic, the line runs through Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus and Poland. Jan Kohout, adviser to Czech President Milos Zeman, says the existing service provides Chinese companies with a great opportunity if they hope to do business in Eastern Europe. "And what we would like to build, as has been mentioned a couple of times by the Prime Minister of Czech Republic, because of its strategic position as center of Europe, so the access and infrastructure will be the best hub for Chinese not only investors, definitely, but also for the Chinese companies willing to settle logistically and with the transportation. So this is one of the areas." The cargo train service, which runs between China and the Czech Republic every two weeks, is also a vital artery for European-made machinery, automotive and medical products making their way into China. |
