The Duanwu Festival or Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated every year on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese luna calendar which fell on Saturday this year. It is a day to commemorate Qu Yuan, a poet and state minister of the state Chu in east-central China during the Warring States Period (475 BC -- 221 BC) in Chinese history, who drowned himself before his state fell to the invading enemy. The Chinese people both in and outside the country have carried forward the traditional culture of the festival for numerous generations. Besides funs like boat race and eating zongzi, a sticky rice snack, they know the great patriotic poet represents a moral integrity and strong character. During the festival, Xinhuanet talked with a number of Chinese now living overseas on three questions. “What do you know about Qu Yuan?” |
