The municipal People's Congress of the coastal city of Xiamen elected Zheng Daoxi as its new top legislator and renewed Mayor Liu Keqing's appointment on Sunday. Zheng, born in Fujian in 1954, served as vice chairman of the standing committee of the provincial People's Congress since January 2008. Liu, 57, is also a Fujian native and has been mayor of Xiamen since February 2011. For both geographical and historical reasons, Xiamen has a strong link with Taiwan from across the Taiwan Strait and is one of the mainland cities that has the most contact with Taiwan. Xiamen is also one of the country's first Special Economic Zones, and celebrated the 30th founding anniversary of the zone in December. |
