The 6-month Shanghai World Expo, which closed on Oct. 31, drew 4.25 million visitors from outside the Chinese mainland, with two-thirds of which arriving from Asia, said the National Statistics Bureau. Overseas visitors and those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan accounted for 5.8 percent of the total 73 million visitors during the expo, which ran from May 1 to Oct. 31 in Shanghai, according to information from the National Statistics Bureau. Specifically, two-thirds of the visitors from outside the Chinese mainland came from Asia, followed by Europe with 708,000 visitors, noted officials. Further, visitors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan reached 1.5 million, or 35 percent of the visitors outside the Chinese mainland. Also, the influx of visitors gave local commerce a boost. Of note, the food industry saw its sales skyrocket by 95 percent between May and Sept. and jump 134 percent in Oct., compared with the same period last year, according to the latest data released by the Shanghai Commercial Information Center. Lastly, expo licensed products were sold for a whopping 30 billion yuan (4.5 billion U.S. Dollars) as of the end of Oct., according to the center. |
