You might have heard about Xiao Shen Yang, who is arguably one of this year's most talked about entertainers in China. If you want to know why he is so popular, here's your chance.

Xiao Shen Yang, a comedian, actor and singer, will headline an extravaganza entitled "Xiao Shen Yang's 101st Night" at the Beijing Workers' Gymnasium on January 9, 2010, it was announced at a press conference on Friday.

Xiao Shen Yang is best known as an artist of er'renzhuan, a performance art originating in northeastern China and similar to stand-up comedy.

Joining Xiao Shen Yang on stage will be other well-known er'renzhuan performers. They include Shen Chunyang, Xiao Shen Yang's wife and stage partner; Ya Dan, Wang Jinlong and Cheng Ye.

Xiao Shen Yang's er'renzhuan performances usually feature him as a transvestite, telling self-created humorous stories in quick succession. His live shows are highly interactive.

For the past year, Xiao Shen Yang and his friends have been touring the country. The upcoming show marks their 100th stop.

Xiao Shen Yang says that although he has often performed the same material whilst on tour, he has prepared some fresh material for the January 9 show.

The star's popularity is formidable. Friday's press conference in Beijing turned into an opportunity for fans to meet their idol, with some coming from as far afield as Hangzhou. They held banners and posters printed with Xiao Shen Yang's image, and shouted "Yang, I love you!"

"You guys come to see me every time," Xiao Shen Yang responded, "I appreciate your support and wish everyone a happy New Year."

The Xiao Shen Yang phenomenon began almost instantly after this year's Spring Festival Gala on China Central Television, which was watched by the nation on the eve of the Chinese New Year. Xiao Shen Yang and his mentor, venerated comedian Zhao Benshan, put on a skit that many regarded as the funniest show of the night.

Xiao Shen Yang's talent also brought him to the attention of top Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, who invited him to play the lead in the black comedy "A Simple Noodle Story". Xiao Shen Yang also sang the movie's theme song.
