Ridanov, a famous Russian designer designed the Guardian of Notre Dame Church. It was his masterpiece and also his final destination.
The church lies in Dongdazhijie in Harbin. It is colloquially called the Virgin Mary Patron Church. At the beginning of construction in Harbin, there used to be a graveyard for Russians at the edge of the city.
As the city grew, the Russian graveyard gradually became the center of the city. So in 1927 the Harbin Police Station regulated the region where the original graveyard was built. Nowadays, the Orthodox Church lies in the center and Harbin鈥檚 deceased can not be buried there, instead they are buried in a new graveyard.
Russians were not very keen on this regulation and they were afraid that their relatives鈥?graveyards would be disturbed. Therefore, they raised the funds and applied to the local government. The government authorized this application and gave empty land to the relatives of the deceased.
The designer is Ridanov. However, the design was not for the Guardian of Notre Dame Church, it was the manuscript for Notre Dame Sabbath Church. The design was reserved in the archive office of Zhongdong Railway Bureau. Nichola Trufanov who was responsible for church construction found Ridanov. Ridanov not only promised to use the designs but also personally became the inspector of the church.
