Wangkui County in Heilongjiang Province has recently launched a series of cultural and creative products based on its local shadow play tradition. Visitors can now engage in hands-on experiences such as carving donkey-hide shadow puppets and take home their own creations as souvenirs of this intangible cultural heritage.
With a long history, Wangkui shadow play is a traditional folk theater art that uses donkey hide as the primary material to craft figures, warriors, animals, and other silhouettes. This art form integrates literature, music, fine arts, carving, and performance.
Chinese shadow play was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011.
