“History is like a mirror; those who refuse to confront it are doomed to fail.” On December 26, 2024, Evan Kail, an American who became known in China for his donation of an album documenting the war crimes committed by Japanese invaders during World War II, made the former site of Unit 731 the first stop on his Harbin tour. It was at this very site that he gained a profound understanding of the suffering endured by the Chinese people and further recognized the significance of the album. In a gesture of reverence, he inscribed the word “peace” in both Chinese and English on the message board, expressing his longing and call for peace.
