Hu Yifeng, former president of the Higher People's Court of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on Thursday stood trial for alleged bribery at a court in the city of Xinzhou in Shanxi Province.
Prosecutors accused Hu of taking undue advantage of his various posts in Inner Mongolia between 1997 and 2018 to provide help for others on matters such as project contracting, personnel promotion and case handling. In return, he accepted money and valuables worth over 35.5 million yuan (about 4.94 million U.S. dollars).
In 2019, after his retirement, Hu used the influence of his previous positions to assist others in case handling through relevant officials, accepting 2 million yuan in cash in return, according to the indictment.
During the trial, prosecutors presented their evidence, which the defendant and his lawyers cross-examined.
Hu pleaded guilty and expressed remorse in his final statement.
The verdict will be announced in due course.
