China's Sun Yuquan was shown the door out in the tennis men's singles first round, beaten in straight sets by Gian Ortenzi of Italy at the Chengdu Universiade here on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Ortenzi broke the local favorite in the third game to win the first set 6-4.
Cheers from the audience brought the young Chinese player great support as well as much pressure, and nervous Sun got broken twice in the second set, losing 6-4, 6-2 in the first round.
"I haven't recovered from my injuries yet, and playing on the home soil brought some pressure to me, so it's pity to lose in the first round," Sun said.
"I will also compete in the mixed doubles with Tang Qianhui, and I will try my best with my partner to gain a good result," added Sun.
Also on Sunday, Sun's teammates Gu Jin/Zhao Zhao beat Alejandro Moncada/Manuel Monyota from Colombia 6-3, 6-1 in one hour and six minutes and advanced to the men's doubles second round.
