China is unlikely to see large-scale outbreaks of COVID-19 in the short term, said an official from the country’s Bureau of Disease Prevention and Control at a press conference on Wednesday.

National fever clinic data shows that the COVID-19 situation in China is fluctuating at a low level, said He Qinghua, an official with the National Health Commission's Bureau of Disease Prevention and Control.

He pointed out that in early April, the COVID-19 infections dropped to its lowest level since December 2022, but the daily number of positive cases and the proportion of positive cases have shown a slight upward trend after that.

The infected population is mainly those who have not been infected, those whose immunity has declined, and those with immunodeficiency, He said, citing expert analysis.
