Dyke breach in Yellow River tributary closed in China's Shanxi

A nearly 20-meter-long breach was closed Friday in a section of the Fenhe River, a major tributary of the Yellow River, in north China's Shanxi Province.

The section in Xinjiang County of Yuncheng City saw the largest flood crest in nearly 40 years due to continuous rainfall and water from the upper reaches. The flooding resulted in a breach at about 5 p.m. Thursday near Qiaodong Village of the county, according to the county government.

County authorities have evacuated 17,631 people so far, housed more than 1,800 people in temporary settlements, and consolidated 13.7 km of dykes.

More than 500 people and over 100 units of machinery and vehicles were sent to close the breach. Enditem
