Tokyo stocks advanced Thursday morning on the back of U.S. shares gaining ground on Wall Street overnight following some upbeat corporate earnings results and amid expectations for domestic earnings to follow suit.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 144.20 points, or 0.64 percent, from Wednesday to 22,769.58.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 8.00 points, or 0.49 percent, at 1,646.14.
Pharmaceutical, rubber product and mining-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
