Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index falling 0.85 percent to end at 2,546.33 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.95 percent lower at 7,298.98 points.

Combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 236.07 billion yuan (about 34.15 billion U.S. dollars), down from 238.73 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Most shares declined, with losers outnumbering gainers 1,166 to 218 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,676 to 334 on the Shenzhen bourse.

Material trading, furniture and medical device were among the sectors that declined the most. Shanghai Material Trading dropped by the daily limit of 10 percent to close at 9.43 yuan per share, while Xilinmen Furniture lost 7.64 percent to end at 11.85 yuan per share.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.68 percent to end at 1,216.69 points.
