Chinese stocks closed mixed Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closing at the lowest in more than 31 months. The index edged down 0.18 percent to close at 2,664.8 points, the lowest since Jan. 28, 2016. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.12 percent higher to end at 8,168.1 points. Trading remained thin, with combined turnover at the two bourses at 221.2 billion yuan (about 32.3 billion U.S. dollars), down from 247.8 billion yuan on Monday. The steel sector dropped the most on Tuesday, with the sub-index down 2.89 percent. Maanshan Iron and Steel Company dropped by the daily limit of 10 percent. Cement and coal sectors were also among the weakest, with the sub-indexes down 1.92 percent and 1.57 percent respectively. Anhui Conch Cement Company was down by 4.81 percent. China Shenhua, the largest coal miner in China, dropped 2.05 percent. Bucking the downward trend, the sub-index of the oil sector surged 2.8 percent, with Shaanxi-based Tong Oil Tools Co., Ltd. surged by the daily limit. The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.31 percent to close at 1,395.17 points. |
