Chinese shares closed lower Thursday with the cement industry leading the decline.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged down 1.14 percent to close at 2,737.74 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.45 percent lower at 8,552.8 points.

Trading remained thin, with the combined turnover on the two bourses standing at 253.5 billion yuan (about 37.1 billion U.S. dollars), up from 246.4 billion yuan the previous trading day.

The cement industry led the decline with the sub-index losing 2.53 percent.

Xinjiang Tianshan Cement lost 6.68 percent to end at 8.24 yuan per share.

The steel industry also registered a sharp decline with Xining Special Steel dropping 6.61 percent to end at 4.66 yuan a share.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, lost 1.57 percent to close at 1,457.92 points.
