Wu Tao has taken his 12-year-old son to play table tennis every afternoon in the Ningxia Qinshui Sports Center this winter vacation. "I hope the sports could bring him a pleasant and healthy vacation, for the school lessons have taken up too much of his leisure time," Wu said. According to Wang Yue, the table tennis training class enrolled over fifty students during the winter holiday, an obvious increase compared to the rest of the year. Wang is the coach of the table tennis club at the Ningxia Qinshui Sports Center. Like Wu Tao, more and more Chinese parents no longer view the vacation as extra-curricular class time, but choose to make it a relaxing time for their children. Various sports training courses, including table tennis, basketball, taekwondo, are all filled with children aged 5 to 18 in Yinchuan, the capital city of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. An authoritative study has showed that Chinese teenagers' physical wellbeing has declined over the past 30 years. The obesity rate of Chinese children has climbed in recent years because of an unscientific diet pattern and a lack of sports. Shao Xiaodong says it's easy for children to become addicted to cell phones or computer games, so during the holidays the sports department will organize something to enrich their lives and form good exercising habits. Shao is the head of the Teenager Sports Department of Ningxia Sports Bureau. |
