[Photo: Chinanews.com]The 3 Chinese tourists injured in a robbery in Johannesburg, South Africa are recovering well and have received the first batch of compensation of 80,000 yuan (around 11,600 USD) from insurance companies, reported Guangxi Daily. The tourists, from Liuzhou in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, were robbed while checking in at a hotel at the Johannesburg airport on Sunday night. They were later sent to a local hospital as all of them had been injured by the criminals, who attacked the trio using sand-blasting guns. After the incident, the Consulate-General of China in Johannesburg immediately sent people to check the wellbeing of the tourists and contacted local police, urging them to arrest the perpetrators as soon as possible. Authorities in Liuzhou including the government, foreign affairs office and Commission of Tourism Development have also been closely watching the development of the incident. A tour escort left for Johannesburg from Liuzhou on Tuesday to take care of the injured tourists and offer them psychological counselling. On the same day that the robbery happened, the Consulate-General of China in Johannesburg released a warning to Chinese tourists to South Africa, as the robbery was the second of its kind in a week. It advised Chinese tourists to avoid showing off big sums of money or luxury goods in public places. Chinese tourists also have been advised not to take flights that arrive at night, as the frequency of robberies and other crimes near airports is higher after dark. |
