All 5A tourist attractions in China are required to be equipped with family toilets, said China's Tourist Administration. This year, 604 family toilets will be built or renovated, with 271 new facilities and 333 rebuilds.

For mixed groups of travellers, especially families, it may not be easy for little children, seniors or disabled people to go to toilets alone. Family toilets are to bring convenience to those people as a family member or assistant can stay in the same toilet stall with the person requiring assistance, reported sina.com.

Guangdong province in south China plans to build 29 family toilets this year, and Henan province in central China will conduct a general investigation on all toilets at 3A tourist attractions (the third best class).

In China, family toilets are also called third public toilets, and are essentially equivalent to unisex toilets. In America, the White House also has toilets of this kind.
