China's Ministry of National Defense said on Saturday that the country would return a U.S. unmanned underwater vehicle, which was seized by the Chinese navy, in an "appropriate" manner. Defense ministry spokesman Yang Yujun confirmed that a Chinese Navy rescue ship found the "unidentified equipment" in the South China Sea and checked the vessel to prevent any navigational or personnel safety issues. Yang said China and the U.S. have been in communication over the issue. Yang also expressed regrets that the US publicly hyped the incident, an act which he said was neither appropriate nor conducive to the resolution of the incident. At the same time, the spokesperson noted that the U.S. navy has sent ships and planes to the South China Sea frequently for investigations and military surveys. China opposes such activities and will continue to remain alert to similar ones in the future, said Yang Yujun. Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis said on Friday that the US side have lodged a formal request to China to return the vessel. The vessel was used to collect unclassified data, such as water salinity and temperature, said the official. |
