A former senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Yunnan Province has been sentenced to 14 and a half years in prison for accepting bribes totaling more than 24 million yuan, about 3.46 million U.S. dollars.

Qiu He was found guilty at Guiyang City Intermediate People's Court in Guizhou Province of taking advantage of his positions to seek profit for others in project development, acquiring bank loans and job transfers between 2008 and 2015.

Qiu served as CPC chief of Kunming, capital city of Yunnan, and was also a former deputy chief of the CPC's Yunnan Provincial Committee.

A statement from the court said Qiu He had accepted bribes worth about 24.34 million yuan either directly or via his staff, and had amassed personal assets worth 2 million yuan. The court ruled that his ill-gotten gains should be turned over to the state. The court added that a lesser punishment had been issued as Qiu had admitted his crimes and had voluntarily handed over his illicit gains.
