[Photo: Xinhua] A nursing home in east China's Jiangsu Province has recently established a reward system to encourage people to visit their elder parents more often, according to Yangtse Evening News. Fuxing Nursing Home in Suzhou City said that anyone who visits their parents 30 times within two months will get a 200 yuan coupon (30 USD). The coupon can be used in the nursing home for their parents. So far, 30,000 yuan of coupons (4,350 USD) have already been distributed to 227 people. The director of the General Affairs Office in Fuxing Nursing Home said as China's society ages they need to start considering the senior citizens. The nursing home has 512 senior citizens with an average age of 81. They said they are adding more mental care for the elderly despite the professional physical care. Most of the elderly's children only visited their parents once or twice every month, but now 129 people visit to fill the requirements for the coupon. An elderly people surnamed Wu, who lives in the nursing home, is over 90 years old. He said his son visits more often after the system has been carried out. "It seems the system is working." Wu said. His son visits about once every three months. When he found out the reward system, he said he felt a bit guilty. Many family members said the reward isn't worth much since the highest is only 200. But the real value and influence cannot only be measured by money. The head of Fuxing Nursing Home said there are more "4-2-1" structure families, in which a husband and a wife need to raise 4 parents and 1 child. The reward system is not only a reward, but also a reminder. |
