A public artwork in Shanghai, said to be a rip-off of a large-scale work by a renowned British artist, is to be torn down, reports thepaper.cn.

The original artwork, called "timepiece" by Wendy Taylor, sits on the banks of the Thames next to Tower Bridge in central London. The work acts as a giant sundial.

Wendy Taylor told the British newspaper The Independent, that she was shocked when she was shown photographs of the Shanghai sculpture. She said it was an obvious copy of her 1973 work, and said the likeness cannot be a coincidence.

After being alerted to the similarity, the local authorities in Shanghai ordered the company which made the statue to carry out an immediate investigation to verify the facts. The company has now covered up the statue in preparation for its removal.

The statue has been located in the Pudong New Area's Dongchang Riverfront Garden for at least 10 years. There is no sign stating the name of the artist or when it was created, reports thepaper.cn.
