![]() The site of the crashed plane carrying Brazilian soccer team Chapecoense near Medellin on Nov. 29 [Photo: Imagine China] Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent condolences to Brazilian President Michel Temer and Bolivian President Evo Morales, following the plane crash which killed 71 people on board. The plane was carrying 81 people in all, including members of a Brazilian football team. It came down moments before it was due to land in Medellin, Colombia. The dead include almost the entire Brazilian football team Chapecoense, along with around 20 sports writers who were flying with the team to cover the Copa Sudamerica (South American Cup). Six people survived the crash, including 3 football players, 2 members of the flight crew, and 1 sports reporter. Flight 2933 was operated by South American carrier Lamia. It took off from the Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. Brazilian President Michel Temer declared three days of mourning and offered assistance to the families of the victims. World soccer body FIFA, Brazil's Soccer Confederation and the South American Soccer Confederation (Conmebol) all issued statements offering their condolences. Conmebol has suspended all confederation events until further notice. |
