The Chinese government is on-record saying it believes an improved relationship with the Philippines will contribute to regional peace and stability. Foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying has made the comments amid questions about the agenda for Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's current visit to China. "People from both China and the Philippines have high expectation towards president Duterte's visit. A healthy and stable bilateral tie will be conducive to the two countries as well as regional peace. We believe all those supporting peace and prosperity in Asia-Pacific will welcome the Philipine leader's visit". The Chinese side says it's also optimistic about Duterte's approach to issues in the South China Sea. "We've noted President Duterte expressed trust towards China several times. He hopes the visit could help properly resolve related issues and expand cooperation. We are back on track for resolving disputes via dialogue and negotiation. That is a good gesture for friendly neighbors". Duterte has been on-record saying the dispute between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea can be resolved through negotiations. As part of his time in China, the Philippine president will meet with China's top leadership, including President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and top lawmaker Zhang Dejiang. |
