Physisists from around the world are taking keen interest in China's new quantum satellite.

Jorg Schmiedmayer is the head of the Institute of Atomic and Subatomic Physics at Vienna's University of Technology.

"I think the project is definitely on the very, very top level of quantum physics. It tests quantum physics in a regime where it was never tested before. It's also technologically at an extremely high level. I think it's also an important project to breach the gap between continents, breach the gap between cultures. I think that's between political systems, I think that's very important."

Polish physicist Marek Zukowski with the University of Gdansk says the work Chinese scientists have been doing with quantum mechanics is quite remarkable.

"Now China is becoming a very important player in the field of science. To be honest, China is returning to its old place in the history of the global influence, superpower 2,000 years ago. And it's becoming superpower nowadays, and also superpower in science."

Quantum physics refers to the understanding of how subatomic particles influence our environment.

Work in this field is the closest humanity has come so-far to understanding how our universe works.
