Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has met with Myanmar's de facto leader and the chief of the country's military as part of his first trip to the country since its new government took power.

In meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi, Wang Yi says his visit to Myanmar, just days after the new government took office, should be viewed as a symbol of China's "fraternal friendship" between the two neighbors.

Wang Yi says ties between China and Myanmar are now at a new historical starting point.

He also says China's policy toward Myanmar will not be affected by the change of the political landscape in Myanmar.

For her part, Aung San Suu Kyi, who heads the ruling National League for Democracy, and is also the country's new Foreign Minister, says China and Myanmar's interests are inter-linked, saying China's continued support to Myanmar is of great significance.

In meeting with Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar's military, the two sides discussed ways to maintain stability in the two countries' border areas.

For more on Wang Yi's time in Myanmar, CRI's Tu Yun spoke earlier with Jia Xiudong, Senior Research Fellow from China Institute of International Studies.
