    Far Eastern State Technical Fisheries University (FESTFU) meets its 85th anniversary with a modern campus and updated fishery education system including fishery science research base and innovative production center. University has 7 educational institutions, Maritime Fisheries College, Lyceum and 4 university branches, located in Primorsky Region, Sakhalin Island and Siberia. FESTFU has graduated more than 71 thousand specialists: engineers, sea captains, experts in field of ichthyology, industrial fisheries, marine biologists, technologists, economists, accountants, ship engineers, electrical engineers, managers and employees in governmental agencies.

    Far Eastern State Technical Fisheries University expands and strengthens international partnership with foreign universities including joint educational programs and mutual student exchange and joint scientist case studies. Oure partner universities are: Northeast Agricultural University (Haerbin, China), Dalian Ocean University (Dalian, China), Dalian “Neusoft” University of Information (Dalian, China), Shanghai Ocean University (Shanghai, China), Changchun University (Changchun, China), Changchun University of Science and Technology (Changchun, China), Singapore Maritime Academy (Republic of Singapore), Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (Vietnam).

    Practice and training for foreign cadets on board FESTFU’s Sail Training Ship “Pallada” is an important step in the international relationship development. More than two hundred cadets from Shanghai Ocean University, Singapore Maritime Academy and Brunei Maritime Academy went sailing on board “Pallada”. Such joint voyages provide an exchange of experience between Russian and foreign universities, establish cultural ties and friendship and also provide practice in English which is an international seamen language.

    Sail Training Ship “Pallada” is operated by FESTFU since 1999. Ship’s captain Mr. Nikolai Zorchenko and command staff have been awarded by state and government awards, Diplomas of the Federal Agency for Fisheries for the excellent professional work and training of qualified maritime professionals.

    STS “Pallada”

    - has made 132 voyages, has passed more than 800 thousand nautical miles; it has visited more than 157 ports in 53 countries;

    - runner-up and winner of international regattas and sailing ships festivals;

    - the longest time spent sailing was registered in 1997 – 311 days!

    - registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the most high speed sailing ship in its class: it is capable to build up speed under sail up to 18,8 knots;

    - made two round-the-world voyages: in 1992, which lasted 189 days, and from 2007 to 2008 which was dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the world expedition of Russian ships under the command of F.F.Bellingshausen and M.P. Lazarev and the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Russian Research of Antarctica, with a duration of 284 days;

    - 2010 - participated in the wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial to the fallen Russian sailors (port of Singapore) in the framework of the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 and the World Exhibition “EXPO-2010” (Shanghai)

    - 2011 – The International Trans-Pacific Expedition, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first space flight of Y.A. Gagarin and the 270th anniversary of the discovery of Russian America by Russian Seafarers.

    - 2015 - made an International historical and memorial expedition, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory of 1941-1945.

    - Sail Training Ship “Pallada” is presented to the listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most high speed tall sail training ship in the world to exceed a speed of 18 knots. During the round-the-world voyage of 2007-2008 new world speed record for tall sail training ship was set – 18.8 knots.

    - Practice on board STS “Pallada” has become a real school of courage and maritime fraternity, showed special aspects of maritime professions for 13 thousand students, cadets and sailor boys from marine and fisheries educational institutions of Russia – Moscow, Astrakhan, Arkhangelsk, Kaliningrad, Kostroma, Volgograd, Kerch, Mari El Republic. Students had a practice in watchkeeping, participation in sailing and storm rush works, strict discipline, marine works.

    Sailing on board the tall ship is a study and hard work, and time to build up an experience. All students are taught all the academic subjects not to be behind in studies. Cadet corps is divided into three divisions: academic, working and the watch. Composition of these groups varies every day, supervisors and foremen keep records of orders, work and watches, so each student goes through all kinds of activities. Students need to get used to the sea which can be different deceptively quiet, calm or moody, rough and even mountainous.

    After completion of the education program students pass tests and exams: safety, fire safety, ship rig, tackles, jobs involving all hands. Students appointed to the pillars as everyone has his own responsibilities. Also students have an obligatory examination for admission to work with the rig.

    Command and cadets have a great responsibility, they represent Russian Federation abroad, take part in ceremonies dedicated to the memory of the fallen countrymen; events on board, guided tours for guests during the Welcome days.

    President of FESTFU Mr. Georgiy Kim: “I believe that the educational campaigns, which are checking strength and courage of young sailors are perfect for patriotic education. Going practice on board STS “Pallada” helps students of FESTFU and other educational institutions to learn the specifics of the fishing industry and marine fishing professions. Romantic of voyages on board “Pallada” is perceivable: young man who comes on board as a cadet is offsigned as a hardened sailor. The main goal of the crew is to promote students to love sea and their profession.”
