[Photo: eastday.com] The United Nations Development Program has designated two pandas as its first-ever Animal Goodwill Ambassadors in southwest China's Sichuan Province. Agi Veres, Country Director of UNDP China, said the decision was made based on the popularity of pandas across the world, as well as China's efforts in protecting the species. "I'm very, very impressed with the [China's work] by doing a lot of very, very important research that nobody else did in the entire world, and doing the kind of education that we need for people to understand, not just the importance of pandas, but the importance of conservation of our environment in general." The UNDP also has launched a global naming campaign for the two animal ambassadors. Participants can visit giant pandas at over 20 zoos in 13 countries, submit a video saying why sustainable development is important to them, and give their suggested Panda Ambassador names. On May 22, 17 winning entrants will be selected as UNDP Panda Envoys to visit the Chengdu Panda Base in Sichuan. |
