According to UNESCO, two factors won the title for the city: one is the place of music at the heart of Liverpool's contemporary culture, education and the economy; and the other is the city's commitment to having a clearly defined music, education and skills strategy for young people. Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said Liverpool was renowned for its musical influence and that this status was the ultimate, and appropriate, accolade for a city which lives and breathes music. Liverpool was already the World 'Capital of Pop', and that the latest award came 11 years after UNESCO awarded it World Heritage Site status.
