Results of a new biennial survey show average wages for Chinese workers came in at 30,197 yuan per year (apx. 4,700 USD) in 2014, a yearly increase of 9.1%.

The average weekly working hour per person in 2014 has decreased from around 50 hours to about 45 hours since 2012. Over 60% of the over-time work is voluntary. Foreign-owned companies and joint ventures have the highest frequency of working overtime.

The biennial China Labor Force Dynamics Survey was conducted by the Center for Social Surveys at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. It tracked a total of 23,594 workers aged 15 to 64 nationwide.

The survey also found the average years of education in the Chinese work force is 9.28 years. Very few have acquired work certificates through training.

In terms of family incomes, the top 20% has reached an average of 153,546 yuan per year, which is 21-times what the bottom 20% make. There is also a huge gap among the families in urban and rural areas.
