With the rise of China's e-commerce, Chinese courts are also increasingly looking online to carry out judicial auctions.

According to China News, from June 2012 to July 2015, nearly 800 courts in 23 provinces, cities and autonomous regions registered accounts on sf.taobao.com, China's largest site for judicial auctions, completing more than 130,000 auctions.

Authorities from Taobao.com, the country's largest online consumer-to-consumer shopping site, said online auctons provided advantages including zero commission cost, high auction rates and high premium rates.

So far, all courts in Beijing and six provinces have opened accounts on Taobao.com, while a number of courts in 17 other provinces are testing the option, China News reports.

For example, 96 courts in south China's Fujian Province have opened accounts on Taobao.com. As of June 20, 2015, 1,200 auctions have been completed, with total transactions volumes reaching 248 million yuan, or approximiately 39.94 million US dollars, and an average premium rate of 23.1%.

Ge Fudong, Deputy Director of the Executive Board at the Fujian Provincial Higher Court, said online auctions were more transparent than traditional judicial auctions and could attract more bidders and deter corruption.

On February 26, 2015, China's Supreme People's Court issued a blueprint to encourage online judicial auctions. Liu Guixiang, Director of the Executive Board at the Supreme People's Court, said courts were allowed to carry out judicial auctions through third-party commerical websites, like Taobao.com, without an agent.
